MathematicsFor the 2011-2012 school year, this eighth-grade class is taught by Mrs. Heck. This course is generally taken in ninth grade. Topics include: solving equations and systems of equations, graphing, factoring, various word problems, and some geometry. Our textbook is Algebra 2 (third edition) published by Saxon. This class is usually taken in tenth grade. We will be studying the basic building blocks of geometry (points, lines, planes), logic and proofs, congruent and similar triangles, quadrilaterals, area formulas, and more. Our textbook is Geometry published by Prentice Hall. This class is most often taken junior year. Students will work on geometry review and some more advanced algebra problems and will focus on trigonometry, logarithms, and advanced graphing. Our textbook is Advanced Math (second edition) published by Saxon. This class is usually taken by college-bound seniors. This course begins with a review of advanced math topics, and then we focus on the three main components of calculus: limits, derivatives, and integrals. We will spend the most time on the first two concepts with an introduction to techniques of integration. Our textbook is Calculus (second edition) published by Saxon. This course is a math-based science class including juniors and seniors. We will learn more about God's creation as we study motion, energy, light, electricity, and more. This course includes a hands-on lab component where students work in groups to apply the concepts they learn about in the text. Our textbook is Physics published by Saxon. For the 2011-2012 school year, accounting will be taught by Mrs. Blackwell.Occasionally, students take other math classes not included above. Coursework is done independently, and thus students must be highly motivated and get prior approval from the math instructor and the administration.Algebra IMade with XaraGeometryPhysicsAccountingIndependent StudiesMrs. Parker's Bio: I graduated from NCA in 2006. I was involved in soccer, basketball, student government, and the Youth Leader of Tomorrow program. I then attended Grove City College and earned a B.S. in mathematics with PA teaching certification. After graduation, I was a substitute teacher in Troy and Canton and worked at a bank during the summer. I loved my time at NCA in the past and am excited to be back! Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My door is always open to students during the day as well.Algebra IIAdvanced MathCalculusGradebook:Math grades this year will be posted on Engrade, an online gradebook. On the first day of school, students will receive an access code, which they then enter on www.engrade.com. They then create a username and password for future log-ins. Grades will be posted online, and parents and students are encouraged to use this resource to monitor progress from home. If you have any questions or problems with Engrade, please contact Mrs. Parker.
